BIOSECURE

BIOSECURE is a four-year research project supported by the European Union with a budget of 5 million euros and 17 participating partners, from 12 European countries. The project aims to enable decision makers in livestock farming to understand, prioritise, and implement evidence-based, cost-effective, and sustainable biosecurity management systems.

Biocheck leads the work package on Exploitation, Communication, and Dissemination and will contribute to this project by providing detailed insights into current biosecurity measures in livestock production. Moreover, new Biocheck scoring systems will be developed in the framework of this project.

Having a printable version of the Biocheck.UGent surveys is really helpful. I take them with me to the farm and use them for making notes.

After getting biosecurity advice, I now have a dedicated loading area for my finisher pigs with separate boots and cleaning equipment. That way the driver is kept away from the other animals.

The Biocheck.UGent surveys are quick and easy to use!

After advice from the Biocheck.UGent team, I have a designated area for the delivery of semen at the entrance of the farm. This way, no one from the AI-company needs to access the farm premises.

After performing a biosecurity evaluation, I am keeping piglets from the same mother together as much as possible to prevent the spread of diseases. The groups are also more at ease.

The Biocheck.UGent platform is easy to use and helps us to improve biosecurity efficiently in livestock farms.

After filling-in the Biocheck.UGent survey on my farm, the carcass management seemed to be a topic where things could be improved. Therefore, I invested in a cooled carcass storage with separate transport vehicles for the carcasses.

Together with the Biocheck team, we organized the CID LINES, An Ecolab Company, Academy on Biosecurity (CLAB). For people not familiar with the subject, it’s a unique training and learning opportunity. For more experienced people it’s a great rehearsal opportunity (as people tend to forget).

The online biosecurity course was given by two professional Veterinarians from Ghent University (Prof. dr. Jeroen Dewulf and Nele Caekebeke, both biosecurity specialists). The technical and commercial parts were given by internal specialists.

Luc Ledoux
Business Development Manager CID LINES Europe

Animals that leave the farm are transported to the public road with farm-specific transport vehicles. Hence the driver does not need to access the farm premises.

As a veterinary epidemiologist, I consult food animal producers all over Europe. The use of Biocheck.UGent for audits on farms has standardized and facilitated my assessment of the various biosecurity features that are very important for preventing disease. Farmers appreciate the reports and the benchmarking system, and it inspires them to take biosecurity seriously.

Very recently, I have installed disinfection pumps at each entrance of the farrowing units. Now disinfecting our hands has become a routine!

Biocheck.UGent removes subjectivity in assessments. The Biocheck tool helps farmers identify weaknesses in their systems that may be critical for current or future problems. Biocheck.UGent has become very important in my herd audit tool kit.

We particularly like the benchmarking feature of Biocheck.UGent. This makes for easy comparisons.

The Biocheck.UGent tool fits perfectly into our ideology of disease prevention. With the tool, we can manage several risks related to animal diseases and maintain good food safety.

Ina Toppari
Executive Manager ETT Finland

From my biosecurity report of Biocheck.UGent, there was a risk for disease introduction through visitors. Therefore, I have increased the hygiene measures for visitors before they can enter the stables.

After a biosecurity audit last year, I am now more aware of the risks that transport vehicles pose. Therefore, I build a spraying installation for disinfection of the tires of transport vehicles.

I purchased separate boots for walking to and from the cadaver storage as someone from the Biocheck.UGent team indicated the risks of disease transfer from carcasses to my healthy animals.

I really enjoy the features that come with my advanced user account. I can download farm-specific extended reports that I use as a basis for advising my farmers.
